The smiling female figure once served as a container for storing bones. These so-called relics were attributed to a saint and were therefore regarded as venerable. They could be inserted into the figure through an opening at the back.
The adolescent saint may be identified as Ursula, venerated in Cologne, or one of her companions. The trade in relics created a strong demand in Cologne and many other cities for suitable containers, some of which are displayed in this room. In Aachen as well, the influence of the cult of relics was evident, where relics are still preserved in the cathedral today.
