A nun lies on her deathbed, surrounded by a dozen figures. The embroidery depicts the death of Saint Clare of Assisi in 1253. As a companion of Saint Francis, Clare devoted her life entirely to God, thereby inspiring many women across Europe. Two nuns from the Order of Poor Clares, which she founded, render her final service here, holding a death candle and the Bible.
Clare is embraced by Mary, while at the head of the bed Jesus stands and blesses her. Alongside a group of holy women – including Mary Magdalene, Barbara, and Catherine – Empress Kunigunde is also depicted holding a model of a church; she is venerated as a Franconian saint. The embroidery may therefore have been produced in Franconia, possibly in the Bamberg convent of St. Clare. The textile hanging adorned the front of the altar table on special occasions, such as the feast day of Saint Clare.
