Jesus is shown here as the crucified Christ, who, according to biblical tradition, was executed by his enemies. His eyes are half closed, his mouth is slightly open, and his legs are fully extended. He wears only a loincloth, tied with a voluminous knot.
With this sculpture, the Passion of Christ could be reenacted like a theatrical performance: on Good Friday, the day commemorating his death, the figure was taken down from the cross, placed in a tomb, and mourned. For this reason, it also has separately carved and movable arms.
Other “hands-on” used sculptures include, for example, Jesus on the Palm Donkey, which was carried through the streets amid celebrations on Palm Sunday, the day commemorating Christ’s entry into Jerusalem.
